2A, 2B or 2C: which P1 registration route is still open to your family?

Which phase you can use is mostly decided before the exercise starts: Phase 1 and 2A rest on connections that already exist (a sibling in the school, a parent or sibling who is a former student, a parent on the committee or staff, or a child in the school's MOE Kindergarten), and the Phase 2B volunteer route requires joining as a parent volunteer no later than 1 July of the year before registration. If none of these are in place when the exercise begins, the remaining routes are Phase 2B through an endorsed church, clan or grassroots connection - endorsements that themselves take time to earn - or Phase 2C, for which every school sets aside at least 40 places.

Context

MOE runs P1 registration in a fixed sequence of phases (1, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2C Supplementary), each with its own eligibility conditions and its own registration window in the annual exercise.

What this means for your family

For the 2026 exercise the sequence has nearly run: 2A closed on 10 July, 2B closed on 21 July with results on 27 July, and 2C runs from 28 to 30 July with results on 11 August. A family with no prior connection is not shut out - 20 places per school are reserved for 2B and 40 for 2C precisely so later phases stay open - but at this point the useful question changes from "which route can we build?" to "which schools near us still have room in 2C?". For a child registering in a later year, the calendar works in reverse: the volunteer route must start more than a year ahead, and alumni, church or clan connections need to exist before the registration year begins.

Steps you can take now

  1. Go through the Phase 2A and 2B conditions on MOE's registration-phases page and note, honestly, which your family already meets - and which you could only meet for a later cohort.
  2. If you are considering the volunteer route for a future year, put both dates in your calendar now: join by 1 July of the year before registration, and complete at least 40 hours by 30 June of the registration year - then confirm directly with the school that it actually runs a volunteer scheme.
  3. If you are registering this year in Phase 2C, use the live application and vacancy data to shortlist 2-3 schools that still have room at your distance band.
  4. Note the result date for your phase, and know your next move if unsuccessful: registration continues in the next eligible phase - there is no appeal step in between.
