Student care for working parents: how it works, and why to ask early

Student Care Centres provide care and supervision to school-going children outside school hours, serve children from primary to lower-secondary levels, and operate both within schools and in the community, run by commercial operators or Social Service Agencies. All centres provide meals and homework support, programmes beyond that vary by centre, and the Student Care Fee Assistance (SCFA) scheme subsidises fees for eligible families.

For dual-income families the after-school hours are often the constraint that actually decides a school shortlist, and Singapore's answer to it is the Student Care Centre (SCC) system overseen by MSF.

What this means for your family

The planning consequence is that student care is a place you apply to, not a service that comes automatically with the school place. A school-based centre keeps the day in one building - no transfer between school and care - which is why demand concentrates there; whether your child gets a place depends on that centre's own capacity and intake process, not on P1 registration. So treat care as a second question you ask every shortlisted school, with its own timeline: whether a centre operates on site, who runs it, when registration opens for the incoming P1 cohort, and what it costs. A community-based centre near home or a workplace is the standard fallback, and for many families it works just as well. If fees are a strain, check SCFA eligibility with MSF before assuming care is unaffordable.
