How does your choice order affect S1 posting?
Secondary 1 (S1) posting is decided mainly by PSLE score, and then by the order in which you ranked your choices — among students with the same score, whoever ranked a school higher is prioritised. Only if both score and choice order are tied does citizenship (citizens ahead of PR, PR ahead of international students) come into play, and only after that would a computer ballot decide.

This is a different mechanism from P1 — posting to secondary school (S1) depends on an exam score first, with choice order acting as the tie-breaker among students with the same score.

What this means for your family: choice order is not arbitrary — it is a real factor among students with matching scores. Ranking the school you want most as choice one is, in theory, more advantageous than ranking it lower. But choice order cannot change what your PSLE score itself determines, and it cannot let you bypass rules like distance or citizenship status.
Steps you can take now
- Confirm your child's PSLE score first, then compare it against the target school's recent score reference range (past figures are for reference only, not a safety line).
- Rank the school you want most as your first choice, rather than ordering choices by what seems 'safer'.
- If several target schools are closely matched, understand the citizenship and ballot tie-break rules and plan your ranking strategy accordingly.
- If your child is not posted to any of their chosen schools, know in advance that MOE will assign a school with remaining vacancies, generally based on rules such as address.
